Theo Unruh’s Eagle Scout project build includes a mounting block and fully accessible ramp to make Howard Buford Recreation Area more accessible for all riders, young or old, traditionally abled or not. All horses and riders can benefit from less stress.

**Update!**

Theo has raised all needed funds and completed the build!

 March 19th, 2026

Theo has raised almost 40% of the estimated funds needed without lumber donations or wholesale purchase offers.  Of the estimated funds needed without lumber donations or wholesale purchase offers. He still has quite a bit to go… more updates as soon as we reach out to local suppliers!

Build Day 4- Final Work Day!

May 30th, 2026 - Final build of Theo's Eagle Project Completed!

Safety railing added on high side, gravel surface backfilled, packed, wetted, and vibra-tamped, then a wheel stop ledge was bolted on.

It was a great turnout by troop volunteers again and they made quick work.

I am biased, I know, but I think the ramp came out awesome!!

So very proud of this guy!

To top it off, two juvenile bald eagles played overhead at one point and I thought it a fitting end to this journey. We really had no idea what a community effort an Eagle Project was before this and it's been a life changing experience to go through with both of my boys.

Squeeze rail added in front to encourage horses to stay tight to the mounting ramp and block.

Build Day 3

May 9th - Mainly Just Theo and Rob getting the Squeeze rail set in the ground so horses don't sidestep away from or turn toward the mounting block with a rider who needs assistance

Final structure done.

Build Day 2

May 3rd - Final layers, barrier fabric and fill added. We even had a trail rider coming off the mountain, stop by who had heard about it!

We lost an hour due to thunderheads building up over the mountain but it looked fantastic by the end of the day and we got the main structure finished if not the fill or hitching post/squeeze rail.

Build Day 1

May 2nd - So many came out and gave it their all to get this project off the ground!

There are no power tools allowed to be operated by Scouts so this all had to be done by hand or with adults running tools. Don't worry, after learning how much work a crosscut saw was, to cut just a few pieces, Rob stepped in and used a chainsaw to make the big cuts.

An Eagle Project should take somewhere between to 50-100 hours of work and even though this involved hard labor, so many kids told Theo this was the best or most fun project that they had worked on.

So glad everyone came out for him!

The Special Order 8"x8" pressure treated wood arrived

After getting all the funding together we had to special order the big 8x8 pressure treated lumber and get it to the site in time for the first build date on May 2, 2026.

Jerry's was able to order it in from Washougal, WA (so close to where we came from!) and get it in April 30th.

THEO REACHED HIS FUNDRAISING GOAL!!

It's been a minute but we have some BIG project updates!

#1 -THEO REACHED HIS FUNDRAISING GOAL!!

Thanks to the help from all of your wonderful donations, a weekend working for the Scouts to help park cars for the Spring UO Ducks Game, and an extremely generous gift from Jerry's Home Improvement, Theo Raised or earned $3610.00!

Eagle projects can be such inspiring efforts of community action, and this one was no exception. Watching everyone come together for this great young man to help make this needed project happen locally is beyond inspiring!

Placing Stakes for Build

3-15-26 Survey stakes were placed marking out where the mounting block and ramp will go. It’s been a minute since we updated but fundraising was mostly complete by this point, we got a bid on the 8x8’s needed and found their cost less than expected which helped Theo decide to move forward with trying to complete the entire build vs just the mounting step portion.
